Visitors giving back to the community

In 2023 we raised over $300K to support local initiatives that enrich the lives of community members. Below are the projects we have supported so far.

The Clayoquot Sound Theatre is an intimate venue with great acoustics located downtown Tofino. ​ They present live music, plays and movies.

Built in 1983 by Kim Hoag, Gary Marks and a team of volunteers who went on to stage many live plays in the space. The Theatre will soon be 40 years old and is undergoing vital renovations to keep entertaining the community and keep its legacy alive. The whole space will be revamped and turned into a healthier, more flexible, accessible, and professional venue.

The funds donated will be used to complete the renovations of the Theatre

Ucluelet and Area Child Care Society Playground Renovation

$15,150.00

The Ucluelet & Area Child Care Society is a non-profit society and registered charity that formed in 2002 by local parents to help West Coast families access quality, affordable child care services and programs.

As the largest non-profit daycare provider on the West Coast, the Society currently operates a pre-school and a multi-age program at the Ucluelet Children’s Centre, and a new infant/toddler program at the Little Beans location. The volunteer board of directors supports a range of qualified, passionate staff, and serves as a conduit to advocate for the priorities and needs of West Coast parents.

The funds allocated will go towards furnishing the backyard space of the new infant/toddler daycare, Little Beans. This includes new ground cover, play equipment, strollers and storage.

Royal Canadian Legion Branch 65 Roof Replacement

$75,000.00

The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 65 is a community hub centrally located in the heart of Tofino’s downtown core. The Legion acts as a gathering space for community events, celebrations, recreation, and the arts. The Legion welcomes all age groups and demographics.

The Legion promotes Remembrance and support of veterans, their families, and the communities in which they live.

The Tofino Legion has a 95 year history of supporting local non-profit organizations, they currently provide a free home for the Fish and Loaves Food Bank and the Girl Guides of Canada as well as provide discounted rental rates to non-profit organizations.

The funds allocated will cover the cost to replace the old and damaged roof.

Pacific Rim Hospice Grief counselling for youth

$20,000.00

The Pacific Rim Hospice Society is making a significant impact by hiring a counsellor to provide one-on-one and group counselling, as well as grief education and literacy, to children and youth in the Pacific Rim region.

This program helps youth discuss their feelings and cope with grief in healthier ways, leading to better emotional and mental well-being.

The Peer Education component empowers youth to support each other, fostering a strong community of care among peers. Additionally, the program offers crucial support and education for families, promoting open communication and creating circles of support that benefit grieving youth.

This initiative is particularly impactful, as demonstrated in September 2023 when 13 out of 25 students entering grade 8 had experienced the loss of a parent or sibling in the past two years.

The funding received will support employing a counsellor.

Wickaninnish Community School

Breakfast Program

$13,500.00

The school food program provides healthy food for students at the Wickaninnsh Community School.

It’s been shown time and time again that students who have access to healthy food focus better, concentrate longer and in turn have a much more valuable learning experience.

The consistency of having healthy food available every school day also provides a level of emotional comfort for vulnerable students. This program to provides the students at Wickaninnish Community School with the nutrition they need to thrive and succeed.

The funding received will support the food cost of the breakfast program.

Ucluelet Secondary School

Celebrating learning language and reconciliation in 21 st century

$5,000.00

Students at USS are engaging in a project focused on learning about Truth and Reconciliation with a focus on the First Peoples of Canada. This initiative will culminate in a Truth & Reconciliation exhibition at USS, where students will demonstrate and share their learning.

The project also aims to enhance language development for students and the local community studying the Nuu-chah-nulth language.

The funding received will support the purchase of tools and technology to present their work.

Maaqtusiis Girls Group

$6,000.00

This enriching program empowers Grade 6/7 girls by exploring their identity as Nuučaanuł people.

Participants delve into family history and cultural heritage, fostering a strong sense of identity and community.

The group will invite elders to share their wisdom on the roles of women within the family and community, providing invaluable insights into female empowerment and leadership. Additionally, the program will introduce the girls to traditional cultural foods and crafts, offering hands-on learning experiences.

By meeting weekly, this initiative strengthens cultural ties and builds confidence and pride in their heritage.

The funding received will support craft materials, food, teachers and resources needed for the group.

Youth Environmental Stewardship (YES) program

Surfrider

The Youth Environmental Stewardship Program is designed to educate, inspire, and empower students to become environmental leaders in their community. Combining place-based learning with hands-on, practical engagement, the program helps students develop a deep understanding and connection to the natural world.

By instilling a sense of responsibility for its protection, the Youth Environmental Stewardship Program prepares youth to take active roles in environmental stewardship.

This initiative not only enhances their knowledge and skills but also fosters a lifelong commitment to preserving and respecting the environment.

The funding received will support materials, food, teachers needed for the program.

Youth Mentorship Program

Ha’oom Fisheries

$6,000.00

This innovative program aims to enhance the skills and knowledge of fishers and deckhands by integrating modern techniques with traditional fishing practices of First Nations.

Through mentorship, participants will not only learn the latest methods in the fishing industry but also gain profound insights into the deep cultural connection between fishing and First Nations heritage.

This program promotes a holistic approach to education, where respect for tradition and cultural identity is as important as technical proficiency.

The impact on youth and education is significant, fostering a sense of pride, cultural awareness, and a well-rounded skill set that bridges the past and present.

The funding received will support youth education for fishing, transportation, food and staff.

On The Road Tofino/Ucluelet/

Ahousaht

Science world

$5,000.00

On The Road brings science, fun, high-energy live demos, and activities to BC communities, igniting science curiosity, literacy, and fostering future science leaders.

This initiative is a vital opportunity for youth in regions like Tofino, Ucluelet, and Ahousaht to engage with hands-on science education.

By sparking interest and enthusiasm for science, the program aims to inspire and cultivate the next generation of scientific innovators and leaders.

This initiative not only introduces exciting scientific concepts and activities but also provides an invaluable opportunity for youth in these regions to engage with hands-on science education they might not otherwise have access to.

The funding received will support travel needed to transport science education to all youth in the region.

Indigenous Summer Student Sponsorship

Redd Fish Restoration Society

$15,000.00

Redd Fish Restoration Society was founded in 1995 by loggers, First Nations, biologists and forestry professionals who recognized the need to address the loss of habitat in order to preserve our wild fish stocks

Redd Fish works closely with the 5 Nuu-chah-nulth Nations in our region: ʕaaḥuusʔatḥ (Ahousaht), hiškʷiiʔatḥ (Hesquiaht), tukʷaaʔatḥ (Toquaht Nation Government), ƛaʔuukʷiʔatḥ (Tla-o-qui-aht) and yuułuʔiłʔatḥ (Ucluelet Nation Government), The Nations provide direction and invaluable traditional ecological knowledge.

These partnerships help leverage funding and create training, employment and capacity building opportunities.

For remote communities, it is an opportunity to work in their own territory and to help rebuild one of the most culturally significant resources on the coast: wild salmon.

The funding received will support hiring an indigenous summer student for restoration work.

WildSafeBC Pacific Rim Program

BC Conservation Foundation

$20,000.00

Founded in 1969 by the B.C. Wildlife Federation, the British Columbia Conservation Foundation (BCCF) is a registered society and charity.

Their mission is "to promote and assist in the conservation of the fish and wildlife resources of the Province of British Columbia through the protection, acquisition or enhancement of fish and wildlife habitat."

Established to achieve ‘on-the-ground’ conservation success, BCCF has been involved in thousands of research, restoration, mapping and education projects since 1986.

In 1998, BCCF was approached by members of the Revelstoke Bear Committee and the Provincial Wildlife Conflict Committee to adopt a leadership role in expanding the Bear Aware program to other regions of the province.

Since that time, BCCF has helped to deliver the Bear Aware (now WildSafeBC) Community Programs to residents in hundreds of communities across British Columbia.

The funding received will go towards staff and supplies for the Pacific Rim WildSafeBC Program.
